Founded as a boutique law firm in 1998 by a core group of partners who have worked together for more than fifteen years, we have seen our significant property insurance law practice expand into other areas that serve our clients' growing needs. Knowing where our core strengths lie, we have ensured continuity between each of our practice areas, allowing us to provide our clients a focused and "boutique" experience. We represent our clients in the following practice areas.

Property Insurance Law

Our property insurance law specialists provide a full spectrum of services for leading insurance-industry clients, including the following:

Defending First Party extra contractual "bad faith" matters

Advising alternatives to litigation and representing insurers in the appropriate alternative dispute resolution forums

Representing carriers in matters involving catastrophic losses

Handling formal appraisal hearings, as permitted by the property insurance contract, such as Wailua Associates vs. Aetna Casualty and Surety Company

Representing insurers in coverage and litigation matters involving environmental and mold issues throughout the United States

Handling complex disputes over business interruption and other "time element" claims

Providing carefully analyzed coverage opinions with practical, common-sense advice and a thorough understanding of the latest legal developments in property insurance law. Resolving intercompany disputes involving issues of excess insurance, contribution, and indemnity

Representing carriers on Department of Insurance inquiries

Our team also provides litigation-avoidance counseling services to our insurance clients. Through seminars and publications, as well as individual contact, the group aims to keep clients well informed of recent developments in insurance law that might impact them.

On sensitive matters involving suspected arson and fraud, we:

Conduct searching, effective examinations under oath, and

Suggest avenues of investigation and maintain close contacts with law enforcement personnel and ex-law enforcement personnel in the business of private investigation

We also present speeches and seminars regarding the investigation of arson and suspected fraudulent claims before clients, fire fighting and law enforcement organizations

Employment Law

At Rudloff Wood & Barrows, we aggressively represent employers and management in state and federal courts and before state and federal regulatory agencies. We provide our clients with litigation-avoidance advice and assist our clients in establishing policy meant to create and maintain a productive and well managed work force. By doing so, our clients can avoid litigation, or at least minimize the impact it may have on our clients' businesses. We have also won several motions for summary judgments in key cases, on behalf of our insurance industry clients who were sued by ex-employees.

Construction Law

We have extensive experience representing developers and contractors in all areas of construction litigation in state and federal court. We focus on providing efficient and cost-effective solutions to our clients' litigation needs. We also explore alternative dispute resolution with our clients as an alternative to litigation, if the circumstances warrant it.

Subrogation

We also handle subrogation matters on behalf of insurance carriers, focusing on innovative analysis and cost effective planning, resulting in successful recovery on the clients behalf.

Appellate and Motion Practice

We have appeared before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the California Court of Appeal and other appellate courts. Our attorneys have successfully established important precedent in insurance cases, beneficial to our clients' interest, such as in Wailua Associates vs. Aetna Casualty and Surety Company, et al., 904 F.Supp. 1142 (D.Ha. 1995), which led to the application of the Federal Arbitration Act to property insurance appraisals, and Buxbaum v. Aetna Life and Casualty, et al., (2002) 103 Cal.App.4th 434, which is the first published California appellate decision to address business interruption issues in over thirty years.
