G.
EDWARD RUDLOFF, JR.
G. Edward Rudloff, Jr., a founding partner of Rudloff Wood &
Barrows LLP, was a former partner at Gordon & Rees, where he chaired
the Property Insurance Group, and, before that, was a partner at the
San Francisco law firm of Cooley Godward Castro Huddleson & Tatum,
where he was chair of the Insurance Law Practice Group.
Mr. Rudloff’s practice focuses on property and casualty insurance
law and “bad faith” litigation. He is called upon to render
legal opinions on coverage issues and to defend insurance companies
in the litigation of disputes arising out of insurance contracts.
He has been retained to provide expert testimony on coverage and
claims handling issues, lectures on them, and has contributed many
articles and chapters to professional books and journals.
A member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, Mr. Rudloff’s
practice includes a wealth of trial experience in both civil and
criminal actions all over the State of California and in the federal
courts. He has also appeared on a number of occasions before
the Commission on Judicial Performance in the representation of the
members of the California judiciary.
Mr. Rudloff served as an Assistant District Attorney for the City
and County of San Francisco from 1973 to 1979. His
prosecutions included all varieties of misdemeanor and felony
offenses, the most notorious being one of San Francisco’s largest
mass murder cases, The Golden Dragon Restaurant massacre.
He received his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in
1972. During law school, he was the Book Review Editor of the
Santa Clara Lawyer (now Santa Clara Law Review). He was also a
member of Phi Alpha Delta and editor-in-chief of the law school
newspaper, The Santa Clara Advocate. Over the years, Mr.
Rudloff has been a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council and the
Board of Visitors of the Santa Clara University School of Law.
For nearly three decades, Mr. Rudloff has been rated “AV
Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell. His history of trial
success and litigation victories has inspired his peers and judges
repeatedly to recognize him as one of Northern California’s “Super
Lawyers,” as well as one of a select number of the “Bay Area’s Best
Insurance Lawyers.”
Perhaps Mr. Rudloff’s most impressive civil trial success is his
work as “lead counsel” on behalf of the market of property insurers
in the case tried in the California Superior Court (Orange County)
entitled County of Los Angeles v. Aetna Casualty & Surety Company,
et al. The trial was in two phases each won by the defense
resulting in a judgment including the recovery of costs of many
millions of dollars for the insurers. The plaintiff’s claim
for damages was in the $500 million to $1 billion range.
Mr. Rudloff is a member of the California and American Bar
Associations. He has been a vice-chair of the ABA Property
Insurance Law Committee. He has been active in the Defense
Research Institute, the International Association of Defense
Counsel, where he was chair of the Property Insurance Committee, is
a member of the Board of Editors of the Defense Counsel Journal, and
was the chairperson of the California Membership Delegation.
He is also a member of the Loss Executives Association.
Mr. Rudloff is a member and past President of The Olympic Club of
San Francisco, a former member of the Board of Directors of The
Olympic Club, and a former member of the Board of Directors of The
Olympic Club Foundation. He is also a member of the Board of
Trustees of the Peter J. Cutino Award, an award annually given to
the top collegiate male and female water polo players.
To stay healthy, Mr. Rudloff enjoys competitive swimming,
cycling, scuba diving, and skiing. As a masters swimmer,
he competes all over the world on behalf of The Olympic Club.
